<span style="font-size: large;"><a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/rosencrantz-2">Rosencrantz</a>, by Noriko Ho // <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/guildenstern">Guildenstern</a>, by Cory Ellen Boberg</span><br />
<br />
Every year, <a href="http://www.fibergallery.com/">The Fiber Gallery</a> participates in our local <a href="http://lystour.com/">Puget Sound LYS Tour</a>, and this year, my friend and coworker Noriko & I decided to team up and create not one, but two patterns in celebration of the Tour!<br />
<br />
Noriko's Rosencrantz design uses two strands of yarn and 3 colors to create a cool, marled effect, while my Guildenstern design uses two-row stripes and 4 colors to create a color-shifting stripe sequence. They both feature Queensland Collection United, a wool/cotton blend, and have easy finishing for speedy knitting and wearability.<br />
<br />
We've gotten such great feedback about these two designs that we decided to host a little Knitalong at the shop, starting this Sunday and meeting once a month this summer!<br />
<br />
I've already knit two Guildensterns in super different colorways, and I hope that KAL will be a chance for folks to play with color, share their awesome projects, and get some fiber community love (and prizes!) for participating. </div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
In the two years since I started working on indie.knits full time, I've been lucky to connect and work with some awesome local and American-made yarn companies - and among my favorite folks to work with are <a href="https://www.facebook.com/BlackWolfRanch/">Black Wolf Ranch</a>, a brand that features luxury alpaca blends in luminous colors influenced by the Montana landscape.<br />
<br />
Last year, I knit up a <a href="http://blog.indieknits.com/2016/05/fo-black-wolf-ranch-nusa.html">Nusa cowl sample</a>, and later, designed the <a href="http://blog.indieknits.com/2016/08/pattern-release-jardiniere.html">Jardiniere shawl</a>, using their gorgeous yarns. And this past February at Madrona Fiber Arts, I was delighted to see my designs featured in their booth both as individual patterns and thoughtfully chosen kits.<br />
<br />
While I was there, I got to catch up with Wendy and her lovely team - and when she asked if I would be available to knit up samples of my Salt Creek Hat & Loop for them, out of two different dreamy silk-blend yarns, I was like um, yes please!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/12297234@N07/34211437000/in/dateposted/" title="IMGP5992"><img alt="IMGP5992" height="400" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4185/34211437000_e6c878beff_b.jpg" width="264" /></a> <a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/12297234@N07/34211428990/in/photostream/" title="IMGP5986"><img alt="IMGP5986" height="400" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4194/34211428990_059b6d1ecc_b.jpg" width="263" /></a><br />
<br />
<b><a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/salt-creek-hat">Salt Creek Hat</a></b><br />
<br />
This was the first design that I ever released for sale on Ravelry, so it holds a special place in my heart! I revamped the pattern in 2014, and ever since, I've been so happy to see it keep getting love. The simple cable and twisted stitch details add knitterly interest, while the garter stitch gives it a bit of textured smoosh. And the crown decreases are pretty neat, if I do say so myself!<br />
<br />
I knit up the sample in <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/yarns/library/black-wolf-ranch-rustic-wool">Black Wolf Ranch Rustic Wool</a>, a 70/30 BFL/tussah silk blend, in the colorway Tuscan Sun, which is a beautiful shade of green-scented yellow - like a ripening lemon, or a splash of fresh olive oil. The BFL adds structure and crispness to the fabric, which lets the silk content sing the lead, as the color shimmers and glows from within.<br />
<br />
For more details, you can check out my project page <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/projects/coryellen/salt-creek-hat-2">here</a>.<br />

<br />
<a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/salt-creek-loop">Salt Creek Loop</a><br />
<br />
This pattern came a little later, when I was inspired to try the same textural details of the Salt Creek Hat in a soft, drapey alpaca yarn. I worked on the pattern on a trip to Iceland in 2012, and I have distinct memories of blocking the sample in our rental laundry room during a bout of insomnia: the cement floor and hum of the dryer, the smell of soap and sulfur lingering in the air like a strange, cozy dream.<br />
<br />
I knit up this sample in <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/yarns/library/black-wolf-ranch-spirit-alpaca--tussah-blend">Black Wolf Ranch Spirit Alpaca & Tussah</a>, a 70/30 alpaca/tussah silk blend, in the colorway Cenote', a deep, complex blue-green - just like the pools of clear, cavernous blue of its namesake. In this yarn, the sinuous quality of the alpaca combines with the luster of the silk to create a fabric with amazing drape and shine - like the yarn version of silk crepe-back satin.<br />
<br />
For more details, you can check out my project page <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/projects/coryellen/salt-creek-loop-2">here</a>.<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
One of my favorite things about working as an independent designer is the opportunity to partner with folks who share my love of color, local and independently-produced yarns, and strong, supportive community - and by all of those counts, Black Wolf Ranch has been a total pleasure to work with. If you ever get the opportunity to stop by their booth at a fiber festival or show, I do hope you'll say hello!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
In the meantime, if you're interested in their lovely yarns, you can shop online <a href="http://blackwolfranch.com/shop/">here</a>.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
(And a few of my patterns <a href="http://blackwolfranch.com/product-category/knit-kits/">are available as kits</a> as well, which is pretty awesome!)</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Thanks again to Wendy, Amanda, and the rest of the Black Wolf Ranch team for their support, and for letting me play with their pretty, pretty yarns!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And thank you for reading, friends. Happy Thursday!</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">Wanna Fireweed with me? Here's what we'll be doing!</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br />
Lace and stripes and Spincycle, oh my! Come learn how to plan and create your very own Fireweed shawl - a two-color asymmetrical shawl featuring gorgeous Spincycle Yarns - with the designer, Seattle local Cory Ellen (that's meee!)</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We’ll start by exploring how to use color theory, inspiring images, and personal style to choose colors that will make your heart sing! Then, in the hands-on section of class, we’ll knit Fireweed swatches to practice two-color stripe techniques, an easy way of picking up and knitting, and how to work and troubleshoot simple lace. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
As a handy reminder of the color theory and inspiration we cover, each student will receive a handout with helpful terms, photo examples, and tips on how to approach color pairing in your yarns and projects.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
*********************** </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I'm very excited to be hosted by Nona and Leslie at All Wound Up, a local yarn shop in Edmonds, WA with a fabulous selection of local & hand-dyed yarns and a wonderful community of knitters & crocheters! If you're a Seattle local, I highly recommend checking them out.<br />
<br />
All Wound Up will also be hosting a trunk show of my designs from June 14 - 24 - so stay tuned for more details!<br />
<br />
Happy Wednesday, friends!<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">Why Color Play?</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
There's nothing more tempting to a knitter than variegated & gradient yarns! But once you've got that precious skein in your hot little hands, how do you choose a pattern that will highlight its gorgeous colors? </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
As a knitter and designer with 10+ years experience in the yarn world, this is one of my favorite questions - not to mention a fabulous opportunity to play with the color alchemy of yarns created by talented indie dyers.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
So I invite you to join me as we jump feet-first into the world of variegated & gradient yarns!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Come learn how to choose and use these beautiful yarns in the second workshop of my series on knitterly color play. (You do not need to have taken Part I to attend!)</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">In this workshop, we'll explore:</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
- the basics of color theory</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
- types of variegation & gradients<br />
- how to choose a variegated yarn that speaks to you<br />
<br />
<i>as well as</i><br />
<br />
- how to choose stitch patterns and design elements for variegated & gradient yarns</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
- hands-on swatching of 3 different variegation-friendly stitch patterns</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">Other workshop highlights:</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
As we work, we'll also have the opportunity to look at lots of swatches and samples up close, for examples of variegated and gradient yarns knit into different types of projects.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And, as a handy reminder of the topics we cover, each student will receive a handout with helpful terms, photo examples, and tips on how approach variegated & gradient yarns and projects - so you can keep the color party going at home!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

The <a href="http://blog.indieknits.com/2016/12/upcoming-event-color-play-workshop-at.html">first Color Play workshop</a> at Serial Knitters was a blast, and I'm so excited for the opportunity to come back and share another afternoon of color adventure with you all!<br />
<br />
It should be an awesome workshop - I hope to see you there!</div>

<span style="font-size: large;">Now, Piglet lived in a very grand house in the middle of a beech tree in the middle of the forest - and Piglet loved it. The house had been in the family for a long long time and had his grandfather's name on a broken sign to prove it: TRESPASSERS WILL.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span><span style="font-size: large;">"That," Piglet would explain, "is short for TRESPASSERS WILLIAM, my grandfather's name."</span><br />
<br />
from "Winnie the Pooh and the Blustery Day." <i>Walt Disney's Winnie the Pooh Storybook</i>. 1989.<br />
<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br />
On my coffee table, there is a book: red and fraying at the corners, the embossed design of the cover worn down to a scattering of gold flecks. The image that's left is half of Winnie the Pooh, seated, with one golden finger suspended in the air. The other half - whatever he was holding in one chubby hand, and the rest of his face - are blotted out by a water stain.<br />
<br />
There are twin mysteries there: what, exactly, did the Silly Old Bear's face used to look like? And what on earth did I spill on it back in 1991, when I was three and my favorite pastime was stealing crumbs of cheese from the family refrigerator?<br />
<br />
(The first question is easy enough to address with a quick Google search. As for the second, the world may never know.)<br />
<br />
What I do know is that from ages 3 to 8 or so, the <i>Winnie the Pooh Storybook </i>was my literary comfort food.<br />
<br />
When I listened to - and later, read - the words, I was reminded of the forest outside my back door: I felt the sun through the trees; heard the singing of water and the hush of pine needles beneath my feet. I knew the characters as I knew my friends, in all their habits and foibles and joy. And through their stories - of meeting new people, overcoming fear, and practicing kindness in small ways - I learned how to be a person.<br />
<br />
All of that from a red, water-stained book - which is why, over two decades later, it still sits on my coffee table.<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/12297234@N07/32472523485/in/dateposted/" style="text-align: start;" title="IMGP5589"><img alt="IMGP5589" height="400" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/668/32472523485_a7be6b8f9c_b.jpg" width="264" /></a> <a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/12297234@N07/31660909083/in/photostream/" style="text-align: start;" title="IMGP5933"><img alt="IMGP5933" height="400" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/669/31660909083_6d1447bb47_b.jpg" width="264" /></a><br />
<br />
And so, this week I'm very excited to release Trespassers William, a collaboration with my friend Kenneth of <a href="https://www.thehomesteadhobbyist.com/">The Homestead Hobbyist</a>, featuring his beautiful yarn and inspired by my childhood love of Winnie the Pooh.<br />
<br />
I hope you love it too.<br />

<div style="text-align: start;">
<div style="text-align: center;">
<div style="text-align: center;">
New to lace? Have no fear! In this workshop, we'll play with simple lace using the fun, asymmetrical <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/lupine">Lupine shawl pattern</a>.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We’ll start with the basics in a swatch - practicing increases, simple lace, and even a scalloped edging technique - before jumping into your project. Since the Lupine shawl is a great way to showcase variegated yarns, we'll also talk about how to choose and use variegated yarns in this kind of project.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
At the end of class, you'll have a swatch, a Color Play! Variegation & Gradients handout, and your very own Lupine shawl-in-progress!<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
As much as I'd like to be able to look back and say something concrete about 2016 in my personal and professional life, I'm honestly still pretty confused by it. Not in a bad way - I just feel as though I'm nearing the edge of something meaningful, but I'm still far enough away that the path is spongey and lightless beneath my feet. I can feel the outline of it in the dark, but I really couldn't tell you whether it was a weasel or a bowl of fruit in front of me.<br />
<br />
Which is a strange, untethered kind of feeling - and one that I'd prefer to leave behind in 2016, thanksverymuch.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/12297234@N07/32056068946/in/dateposted/" title="unnamed"><img alt="unnamed" src="https://c3.staticflickr.com/1/342/32056068946_c562106045_z.jpg" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br />
So if I had to say, what was this year, for me?</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b><span style="font-size: large;">2016 was a year that challenged me to say yes to things.</span></b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br />
To my little schnoodle Charlie, who is the puppy love of my life. <3<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
To writing, when I started taking creative writing classes for the first time in 10 years, and connected with a dynamic, passionate, and inspiring teacher and workshop cohort.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
To traveling, when I tagged along to London, Paris, and Hawaii with Blake - and met his awesome coworkers - during his company-sponsored work weeks.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
To teaching workshops in local yarn shops, which basically introduces me to the most wonderful students and lets me dance around and throw metaphorical glitter at them while they practice jogless 2-row stripes.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
TO SWIMMING WITH DOLPHINS, WHICH WAS LITERALLY THE BEST THING I'VE EVER DONE</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
LIKE, I AM CRYING WITH HAPPINESS RIGHT NOW AND IT WAS A MONTH AGO, GEEZ, GET AHOLD OF YOURSELF ALREADY, CORY.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/12297234@N07/31946541592/in/dateposted/" style="text-align: start;" title="IMG_1918"><img alt="IMG_1918" height="427" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/384/31946541592_fbf21993d6_z.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>And 2016 was a year that challenged me to say no to things.</b></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I said no to a lot of expectations about who I should be for other people, sometimes painfully.<br />
<br />
I said no to this blog a lot.<br />
<br />
I said no to a lot of my old ideas and belongings that didn't fit me anymore.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br />
And probably even more than I said no, I said:<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Yes, and... this is what I need.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Yes, and... this is what I'm worth.</span><br />
<br />
(<i>Which sent me into a blubbery pile of puppy snuggles and self-doubt, more often than a person should admit to in respectable company, but let's not dwell on that.</i>)<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
At the end of the day, the important thing is that I made it through - and I'm gonna give myself a Liz-Lemon-style, self-high-five to that.<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>And while we're at it, in 2016 I also made this:</b></span><br />
<br /></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
I also vended at <a href="http://www.knitfitseattle.com/">Knit Fit!</a> as a standalone booth for the first time in November of 2016, which was an incredible opportunity, and one of the highlights of my year.</div>
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/12297234@N07/31298554943/in/dateposted/" style="text-align: start;" title="IMG_1580"><img alt="IMG_1580" height="427" src="https://c8.staticflickr.com/1/486/31298554943_ec2032b1d4_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I am pretty fucking proud of the design and teaching work I've done in 2016. I've worked with some amazing companies, and pushed myself and grown as a creative in some really exciting ways:</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Hello, first exclusive design featured by a Stitches Midwest vendor (Jardiniere!)</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Hello, first 30-minute start-to-finish design proposal (Spectral Lines!)</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Hello, first design in a publication (Gilia!)</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Hello, first design that passed 1000 likes on Ravelry (Cloudburst Hat!)</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And on a teaching note, I developed several pamphlets and class plans for informative, inspiring workshops for knitters - something that has taken me out of my comfort zone, and helped me realize how passionate I am about teaching others about creativity and self-expression.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/12297234@N07/31636209475/in/dateposted/" title="maggiefo3"><img alt="maggiefo3" height="640" src="https://c4.staticflickr.com/1/270/31636209475_f02d8ea8e3_z.jpg" width="425" /></a><br />
<span style="font-size: x-small;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: x-small;">(<a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/maggie-26">Maggie</a> hat by <a href="http://www.norichanknits.com/">Noriko Ho</a> & <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/zara-12">Zara</a> top by <a href="http://paper-tiger.net/">Dianna Walla</a>, both finished recently and tragically unblogged as of yet!)</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And lastly, all of the cool things I've been able to do in 2016 have been made possible by the folks that I count as friends, family, and community - so many of you that I tried to write a list and it got, like, wayyyy too long. I can't express how lucky and loved that makes me feel.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
You all are my sparkle-makers; my confidants and supporters; the wellspring of my woolly heart. Thank you.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I can't wait to see what we create in 2017. Happy New Year.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Much love,</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Cory</div>

<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Why Color Play?</span><br />
<br />
Two-color projects are so hot right now - but with so many gorgeous color options at your fingertips, how do you choose the ones that will make your heart (and your needles) sing?<br />
<br />
As a knitter and designer with 10+ years experience in the yarn world, this is my favorite question: an opportunity to ask and wonder and play at the mysteries & magic of color.<br />
<br />
So I invite you to join me as we jump feet-first into the world of color pairing!<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">In this workshop, we'll explore:</span><br />
<br />
- a knitter-oriented guide to color theory<br />
- ideas & inspiration from art, technique, and personal style<br />
- hands-on swatching and discussion of color pairing<br />
- feedback & ideas tailored to your unique color sense<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
You'll walk out of class with a swatch, a worksheet with handy tips and inspiration, and a metaphorical party hat and balloons surrounding your personal sense of color play. :D<br />
<br />
As a long-time fan of Serial Knitters, I'm so excited for the opportunity to come meet you all and share an afternoon of color adventure together. It should be an awesome workshop - I hope to see you there!<br />

<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/12297234@N07/31102086975/in/dateposted/" title="l (1)"><img alt="l (1)" height="400" src="https://c8.staticflickr.com/6/5513/31102086975_94f4cc23a1_b.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Oh hi, friends!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
So over the summer, my friend Sara and I did an impromptu hat knitalong, which we decided to call Hatamaran - because nonsensical boat puns are the best, that's why? :D</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Well anyhoo, the tradition stuck, and now we're doing it again - only this time, you're invited to join along!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Use Hatamaran as an excuse to get some serious gift-knitting done - or, treat yourself, and knit a bazillion hats while dancing around and singing HATS HATS ALL OF THEM FOR MEEEE!!! and throwing pom-poms at your unsuspecting foes. Either way, it should be a delightful time.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">The Rules of Hatamaran, should you choose to accept them:</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<ul>
<li><span style="text-align: center;">The official Hatamaran kick-off is <b>Tuesday November 22nd</b>, <b>2016</b> and it will end on <b>Friday, December 2nd, 2016, at 11:59 pm.</b></span></li>
<li><b>Pick a number of hats that is challenging - but doable! - for you to knit in 11 days.</b><div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="text-align: center;">1 hat? 5 hats? 11 hats? Doesn't matter! Your goal is up to you.</span></div>
</li>
</ul>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<ul>
<li><div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="text-align: center;"><b>Pick yarn and pattern combinations for each hat.</b><br />Feel free to knit multiples of the same pattern, or all different patterns; be virtuous and stash dive, or be awesome and treat yourself to new yarn or patterns (any and all hat patterns are fair game!). Whatever is best for you is best for Hatamaran!</span></div>
</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><b>Post on the Ravelry group in <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/discuss/indieknits/topics/3531883">the Hatamaran thread</a>, or to Instagram with #hatamaran - (you can always tag me @indie.knits)</b><div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="text-align: center;">In your first post, feel free to share how many hats you're hoping to knit. As you work, share those yarn cakes and WIP pictures, and we shall ooh and ahh over your Hatamaran-itude. Hatamaran-ary. Hatamaran-agement.<br /></span></div>
</li>
<li><div style="text-align: left;">
<b>Make all the hats!!!!!!!</b><br />
Annnnnd this part is self-explanatory. :D</div>
</li>
</ul>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">Prizes & Treats!</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<ul>
<li>From now until the end of the knitalong, use the coupon code <b>HATAMARAN</b> to get a <b>20% discount on any of my hat patterns</b>. (And if you can't quite commit to Hatamaran, that's okay too! You don't need to participate to take advantage of the code.)</li>
<li>Post a photo on the Ravelry thread and/or Instagram featuring any and all of your bound-off Hatamaran projects (end-weaving not required) by <b>Friday, December 2nd, at 11:59 pm. </b>From there, I'll choose <b>2 folks</b> - <i><b>1 each from Ravelry and Instagram</b></i> - to receive a free download of any of my independently-released patterns! Feel free to double-dip and post to both to increase your odds of winning.</li>
<li>I will post winners of the giveaway on <b>Tuesday, December 6th</b>. And if we have a big turn-out, I may add additional prizes for things like Most Epic Hatamaran, or Silliest Hatamaran Project. So feel free to get creative!<br /><br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;">
That's it! I hope you'll join us for this very silly knitalong.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">On your mark... get set... AHOY!</span><br />

<b>Hey friends! The Nifty Knitter's Grand Opening is this week - if you'd like help them celebrate, be sure to head over and like their Facebook page for details on cool giveaways and events!</b><br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
A few months ago, I was standing in a field at <a href="http://flockandfiberfestival.com/">Oregon Flock & Fiber Festival</a>, breathing in that stardust that's in the air when wool-bearing animals and enthusiastic yarn people get together, when I got a curious email in my inbox. It was from Ben Bentler, a musician and knitting enthusiast (!) who just happened to be the the owner of a new local yarn shop (!!) in Issaquah (!!!!) opening this November (!!!!!)</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
As you can probably tell from the exclamation points, I was a little excited about the news.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I was born and raised in and around Issaquah. It's a town on the threshold of the Cascades, where the valley is cut in two by the snake of the interstate: on one side, mountains with tree canopy so thick in places that the sun can't touch the ground; on the other, Lake Sammamish, the surface dampened by fog in the winter, and shimmering black & gold in the summer. No matter how many places I call home, Issaquah is the place that catches my heart every time I come back to it.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br />
So it makes me incredibly happy that The Nifty Knitter is creating a new space, and a new opportunity for yarn folks to come together, in my home city! I went and visited a few weeks back, and I just wanted to share some of my thoughts and impressions with you. <3</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/12297234@N07/30815281986/in/photostream/" title="niftyknitter6"><img alt="niftyknitter6" height="400" src="https://c3.staticflickr.com/6/5341/30815281986_7ee71ac1bd_b.jpg" width="266" /></a> <a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/12297234@N07/30216430733/in/photostream/" title="niftyknitter2"><img alt="niftyknitter2" height="400" src="https://c6.staticflickr.com/6/5341/30216430733_763afb0308_b.jpg" width="266" /></a><a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/12297234@N07/30870405282/in/photostream/" style="text-align: start;" title="niftyknitter7"><img alt="niftyknitter7" height="400" src="https://c3.staticflickr.com/6/5586/30870405282_5632ef9056_b.jpg" width="266" /></a> <a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/12297234@N07/30550909040/in/photostream/" title="niftyknitter4"><img alt="niftyknitter4" height="400" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/6/5478/30550909040_bd6a9afb0c_b.jpg" width="266" /></a><br />
<br />
When I heard that the shop was opening its doors a few weeks early of its Grand Opening, I immediately grabbed my calendar and made a plan to go check it out. And I'm so glad that I did!<br />
<br />
As soon as I walked in the door of the shop, I felt immediately welcome. Like... if I didn't live in Seattle, I'd probably be there every morning with a backpack full of shawl projects and a gallon of coffee, being all like, <i>let's do this!!! </i>Ben and his team have done an amazing job, creating a bright, functional, and welcoming atmosphere in a small and thoughtfully laid-out space.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br />
The yarn selection is awesome, and word on the street is that Ben will be adding even more great stuff to the shop's offerings in the coming weeks and months.<br />
<br />
There's something here for everyone: from hardworking cottons and blends for baby garments, to luxurious yarns from Shibui and The Fibre Company, to eco-conscious brands like Swans Island. There's a fantastic selection of favorites and staples like Cascade, Manos del Uruguay, Dream in Color, Malabrigo, and HiKoo, for gift-knitting and selfish knitting alike; also featured is a selection of harder-to-find yarns like Baa Ram Ewe and Elemental Affects, for those of us who love colorwork and deliciously sheepy wools!<br />
<br />
Even since my visit a few weeks ago, there's more good things coming in - most recently a shipment of Madelinetosh, a perennial favorite for its wide selection of beautiful colors.<br />
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/12297234@N07/30550910100/in/photostream/" title="niftyknitter3"><img alt="niftyknitter3" height="400" src="https://c5.staticflickr.com/6/5530/30550910100_2dd6514833_b.jpg" width="266" /></a> <a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/12297234@N07/30950335716/in/photostream/" title="niftyknitter8"><img alt="niftyknitter8" height="400" src="https://c5.staticflickr.com/6/5609/30950335716_9c4f8ac954_b.jpg" width="266" /></a><a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/12297234@N07/30897428711/in/dateposted/" title="niftyknitter9"><img alt="niftyknitter9" height="400" src="https://c8.staticflickr.com/6/5675/30897428711_b41274663e_b.jpg" width="266" /></a> <a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/12297234@N07/30685175320/in/dateposted/" style="text-align: start;" title="niftyknitter10"><img alt="niftyknitter10" height="400" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/6/5774/30685175320_72346f758f_b.jpg" width="266" /></a><br />
<br />
The shop is a particularly lovely addition to <a href="http://gilmanvillage.com/">Gilman Village</a>, which is a prime location for knitters: close to good coffee, great restaurants, and cool little boutiques. Not only that, it's a neat historic spot, comprised of buildings from in and around old Issaquah. Because of that, many of the buildings are former homes, with all the quirks, charm, and challenges of late 19th- and early 20th- century architecture.<br />
<br />
The Nifty Knitter embraces this character with open arms, to great effect: with a fresh coat of robins-egg blue paint, built-in fixtures that give a little nod to the historical roots of the space, and of course, tons of beautiful yarn, the shop feels like a jewelbox of color. There are wonderful personal touches as well, like a piano and a sweet little shop dog named Toby!<br />
<br />
Overall, The Nifty Knitter excels at striking a balance of open and cozy: with large-scale displays, lots of natural light, and plenty of nooks for knitting and chatting, it's a place that will appeal to knitters of all stripes. I'm so excited to extend Ben and his team congratulations and welcome on building a beautiful new shop, and I look forward to visiting in the future!<br />
<br />
Thanks for reading, friends - and if you're interested, I'd love for you to pop over to <a href="https://www.facebook.com/theniftyknittershop/">The Nifty Knitter Facebook page</a> to show your support and participate in this week's Grand Opening festivities!<br />
<br />
Love,<br />
Cory<br />
<br />
PS. As a final (and exciting!) note, I'll be bringing my Lupine shawl workshop to The Nifty Knitter in <b>January 2017</b> - stay tuned for details!</div>

<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Just in time for <a href="http://www.knitfitseattle.com/">Knit Fit!</a> this weekend, I have not one but two new patterns to share with y'all. I'm so pleased with both designs, and really excited by the positive response I've already gotten to the photos I've shared on Ravelry and Instagram. I hope you love them!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
First up is the Cloudburst Hat, a one-skein project using Malabrigo Rios in my absolute favorite of their colorways, the beautiful variegated Arco Iris.<br />
<br />
This design was created for the <a href="http://www.lystour.com/">2016 Northwest LYS Tour</a> as a thank-you pattern for participants, and to extend the love a little longer, I've decided to make this pattern free until <b>January 2nd, 2017!</b><br />
<br />
When I was working on this hat, I really wanted to showcase variegated and speckle-dyed yarns, while still featuring a stitch pattern with a little interest. (Also, as a side note, the ribbed panel on the side is the perfect place for all the cute enamel pins I've been collecting!)<br />
<br />
For folks who prefer to work with solid and tonal yarns, they work beautifully in this pattern too. I love knitting hats, and I hope this one is just right for all your holiday and selfish knitting coming up this winter.<br />
<br />
You can check out the pattern on Ravelry <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/cloudburst-hat">here</a><br />
<br />
or download your free copy directly <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/dls/indieknits-2/364488?filename=Cloudburst_Hat__Ravelry_.pdf">here</a>.<br />
<br />
Enjoy!<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">

<br />
Second up is Spectral Lines, a collaboration with local dyer <a href="http://blissful-knits.myshopify.com/">Blissful Knits</a> that we dreamed up while I was down at <a href="http://flockandfiberfestival.com/">Oregon Flock & Fiber Festival</a> this last September. She had the most beautiful combination of saturated solid color and speckle-y color-shifting mini skeins, and when she asked if I might have any ideas to feature them along with a single skein of semi-solid gray, I said <i>um</i> <i>yeahhh</i>!<br />
<br />
I was a chemistry major for over half of college, and one of the things that I always loved was all the visual ways of analyzing chemicals: burn tests, spectral analysis, nuclear magnetic resonance imaging. I always thought there was something exciting about being able to see a chemical express itself right in front of your eyes - even when it was ground into nondescript white powder, or present in such small quantities it was nearly invisible.<br />
<br />
And so, color + stripes + nerdiness = Spectral Lines.<br />
<br />
This shawl was an absolute joy to design from start to finish. The yarn base is twisty and a little bit bouncy - my favorite! - and every time I would switch to the next color from my little paintbox of mini-skeins, my heart would go all a-flutter with happiness.<br />
<br />
Already, my test knitters have played with color in gorgeous ways, some substituting all solids and others adding in extra colors in the big stripes. It's been so fun to see what folks dream up, and I'm already scheming my next version!<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
It's available for download for $6.00, or you can check out the details on Ravelry on the <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/spectral-lines">Spectral Lines pattern page</a>.
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.ravelry.com/purchase/indieknits-2/365010"><img border="0" src="http://www.ravelry.com/images/shopping/buy-now.gif" /></a><br />
<br />
As a note, Blissful Knits will also be at Knit Fit! this weekend, so local folks, if you can't wait to get your hands on some of her yarn, this is the perfect opportunity!<br />
<br />
Okie dokie, friends, that's it! Thanks for reading, and hope you have a good weekend.<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
My heart is heavy.<br />
<br />
These past days have been difficult and frightening for many people in the United States, myself included. Many people I follow on social media are calling for a wait-and-see attitude about our President-elect, but at this moment, I am not able to see past the murky ground below my feet.<br />
<br />
This particular election has been brutal for so many, in depths that I cannot begin to imagine. For my own part, it has touched a raw nerve, in its flagrant dismissal and gaslighting of violence and sexual assault.<br />
<br />
When I was 18, I was raped by my 25-year-old housemate, and the fallout of that experience came very close to ending my life. A few years after that, while traveling internationally, I was sexually assaulted for a period of 16 hours over two nights.<br />
<br />
The first experience, I have <a href="http://blog.indieknits.com/2013/01/the-politics-of-hemlines.html">written about</a> here <a href="http://blog.indieknits.com/2016/04/thoughts-on-decade.html">before</a>. The second, I have only begun to speak about in the last year.<br />
<br />
What I learned from the first experience was that my sexuality was a weapon that could be used against me. That one man's blind entitlement was more important than my voice, my body, and my identity. I lost the friendship of almost every person I knew, all because they believed - or were not willing to fight against the idea - that I had brought that violence upon myself, simply by existing in the world as a woman. That betrayal cut as deeply as the rape itself, and its scars linger on my heart even still; in these last days and months, these scars have ignited like kerosene.<br />
<br />
What I learned from the second was to be quiet.<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">I cannot be quiet anymore.</span><br />
<br />
We have chosen as President a man who has shown hate and bigotry to be his highest principles.<br />
<br />
Who promises to hurt my LGBTQ, Latinx, Black, Muslim, Jewish, women, and disabled dear ones.<br />
<br />
Who threatens to take away their citizenship, their bodily autonomy, their marriages, their safety.<br />
<br />
Who has allegedly and admittedly sexually assaulted women, women like me, women who have once again been forced to learn that the only way to stay alive is to stay quiet. And for so many of our citizens - people of color, trans* and queer folks in particular - devastatingly, even quiet has been stripped away as a refuge.<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Enough.</span><br />
<br />
I have already seen the powerful forces of compassion at work in the last days. Voices that are calling for change, for community, for coming together in solidarity with those who are hurt and struggling. I have never used social media so much in my life. I have never texted the word 'love' so much in my life. I have never felt so passionately that we have a duty to our fellow citizens to honor and protect each other, in whatever ways we can muster.<br />
<br />
This is all that I can think to do: to name my fear and release it among kindred hearts, where it might molt and extend its dark wings into a new kind of hope.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">What now?</span><br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I have decided to continue my usual posting in the coming days and weeks. It is a conscious choice on my part, to share the beauty and love in my life in response to all this uncertainty and fear. I understand that not everyone is able to make that choice, and I respect the very real anger and hurt and fear that people are feeling right now. We all process things in our own ways, and whatever that looks like is okay.<br />
<br />
But oh, dear friends, American and beyond: please know that I love you, and I see you, and I am here with you, tonight and always.<br />
<br />
Much love,<br />
Cory Ellen</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This past June, while on working holiday with Mr Blake, I took a stroll down Camden Passage to visit the famous <a href="http://www.loopknittingshop.com/">Loop London</a>. He was in company meetings all day, so after sleeping off my jetlag and devouring a ham croissant in the lobby of the hotel, I set off on the train to check out the sights. It had rained the day before on my visit to the <a href="https://www.vam.ac.uk/">V&A</a>, but the sky hadn't been too threatening that morning, so I skipped the umbrella and went on my merry way to Islington.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Loop, as promised, was like a fairy cottage stuffed with wool. I spent over an hour there, growing a little collection of yarn that I carried around like a puppy in my arms. (<i>Gift yarn for friends! Gift yarn for me! When in London, amirite?!</i>) Then, as I poked around in the laceweight section downstairs, an afternoon rainstorm rolled in, and I had to stay a little longer than I had planned. So I stood there with an armload of yarn as the rain tapped its knuckles across the glass, and I breathed in the smell of wool and wet cobblestone from the open door and thought: <i>this must be what heaven feels like</i>.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
When the rain finally let up, I left, carrying two precious skeins of <a href="http://www.loopknittingshop.com/p/4105/Viola-Merino-4ply---Fingering">Viola Merino Fingering in Speckled Mist</a> (a special colorway just for Loop's 10th anniversary) and a skein of <a href="http://www.loopknittingshop.com/p/5106/Uncommon-Thread-Tough-Sock">The Uncommon Thread Tough Sock</a>, all part of the devious plan that was a-brewin' in my noggin:</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
My friend Sara and I had been kicking around the idea of a little seasonal sweater knitalong, as a way to keep accountable on our sweater knitting and have some fun along the way. <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/vasa">Vasa</a> was our first pattern choice: a drapey, universally flattering top, designed by <a href="http://paper-tiger.net/">Dianna Walla</a>, a talented designer and delightful human to boot.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The only problem with the whole thing was my lack of suitable yarn, which is hilarious considering how much yarn I actually own. (<i>Hint: it's a lot.</i>) But then, with a well-timed trip to Loop, and the exciting possibilities of knitting with gorgeous UK (and hard-to-find Canadian) yarns, my problem was solved!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
A month or so later, I cast on, and it became my at-home movie knitting until recently, when I finally bound off and blocked the darn thing.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Did I make it in time for the season, friends? I did not. Did I end up with a beautiful and wearable garment that will always remind me of walking around London on a rainy afternoon? Yes indeed.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Oh hai there, friends! It's been a while, hasn't it? The fall season has arrived - and with it, a plethora of fiber festivals, classes, and other flagrant knit-wearing opportunities. I have to admit that my brain is a little scrambled from all the fun, as well as with preparations for this year's <a href="http://www.knitfitseattle.com/">Knit Fit!</a>, where I'll be a vendor.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I'm hoping to come back to the blog a bit more than I have for the last six months - I've really been missing it, and you all!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
In the meantime, here's my most recent pair of Lelia Mitts. I've been jamming hard on orange and turquoise lately, and these mitts are a prime example of that.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I worked them up in three yarns: Swans' Island All-American Collection Sport, a delightfully crunchy domestically-produced Rambouillet yarn, as my main color; and a skein of Spincycle Yarns Dyed in the Wool - which was a special edition color, and a little skinnier than its usual sport weight - held double with Jade Sapphire 2-ply Cashmere, as my contrast color.<br />
<br />
Dreamy, right?<br />
<br />
More details are on my project page on Ravelry, over <a href="http://ravel.me/coryellen/vpver">hmeah</a>.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br />
Happy fall, friends, and happy Tuesday!<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Friends, I'm excited to announce that I'll be teaching two project-based classes at <a href="http://www.starlightknittingsociety.com/">Starlight Knitting Society</a> this fall!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I found Starlight about six months ago, at the recommendation of several of my Issaquah Tinker friends who stopped by and discovered this little gem of a store. With a fun, friendly vibe, and a fabulous stock of Fibre Company, Spincycle Yarns, O-Wool, and more, Starlight has quickly become my favorite yarn shop to visit when I'm down in Portland! They have a cozy layout for sitting and chatting, and a jewelbox display of yarns everywhere you look.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This fall, they'll be celebrating their 1-year anniversary with a fab party on <a href="http://www.starlightknittingsociety.com/events/anniversaryparty2016" style="font-weight: bold;">Friday, September 16th, from 5-9 pm</a>, and I'm excited to come celebrate with them on Friday - then teach a couple of fun classes on Saturday, as part of the festivities!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/12297234@N07/19034078978/in/dateposted/" style="text-align: start;" title="lupinefo6"><img alt="lupinefo6" height="400" src="https://c3.staticflickr.com/4/3917/19034078978_965b008891_b.jpg" width="264" /></a> <a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/12297234@N07/24781179895/in/photostream/" style="text-align: start;" title="lelia8"><img alt="lelia8" height="400" src="https://c8.staticflickr.com/2/1510/24781179895_0cf63ed87c_b.jpg" width="264" /></a><br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I'll be teaching two classes based on my designs - the <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/lelia-mitts">Lelia Mitts</a>, and the <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/lupine">Lupine shawl</a> - both on <b>Saturday, September 17th</b>.<br />
<br />
If you're in the Portland area - or you're in the Pacific Northwest and would love an excuse to go on a yarny field trip! - pop over to t<a href="http://www.starlightknittingsociety.com/classes/">he class section of Starlight's website </a>or <a href="http://www.starlightknittingsociety.com/contact-starlightknittingsociety/">call the shop</a> to sign up.<br />
<br />
Okay - onto the details! (Follow the links for full details on materials and skills.)<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
At certain moments, I don't realize that I have forgotten who I am, until a photograph or a scrap of handwriting brings it back to me. It's amazing, the vast amount of sensory information the human brain can store: how it clings like sediment to the darkest corners of your memory, only to be shaken loose by an outline of light in chemicals, or a child's scrawl.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/12297234@N07/29103026045/in/photostream/"><img height="640" src="https://c6.staticflickr.com/9/8512/29103026045_e671959634_b.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Which neighbor's cat was sick but her mother couldn't afford the vet. Which friend wrote letters on paper that smelled like drugstore perfume, mailed from Auckland with an international stamp at the top of the envelope. Which friend slept on her living room floor next to me, how the sun woke me up through the back door and her little red dog was always at my feet. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<div>
I wonder, how did I forget the name of the boy who wrote that I was lovely at any angle?</div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/12297234@N07/29070250226/in/photostream/"><img height="640" src="https://c3.staticflickr.com/9/8294/29070250226_f9178bf5f3_b.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
How did I fall out of touch with the girls from camp who wrote me letters - Chipy and Mouse were their names, but what was mine? I still remember the sound of our voices echoing in the rafters of the mess hall, a chorus of soprano and grit in our throats, hoarse from saltwater and too much yelling. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And there we were, yelling again, just the same.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/12297234@N07/28481593184/in/dateposted/"><img height="640" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8341/28481593184_02490f47dc_b.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Paper in my hands, I'm tempted to tell the ones I still know that I remember them. In my mind they are all six or twelve or seventeen, and their faces still as freckled and smiling as they were that day - that summer, that winter, that fall, that spring - of my remembering. But older now: with medical degrees and babies and fellowships, fewer braces, more scars. My old friends.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Remember when we all rolled up our sweatshirts and fell asleep on the cliff above the canal, whispering and looking at the stars? I'd ask.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Yes, they might say. I do.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
One of the biggest dangers I've faced as I work towards designing full-time is the trap of thinking that creative self-care isn't work.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I've dropped into post-creative depression enough times that I should know better, but still, there it is: one day, when the work is finally out in the world and I'm proud and excited and tired, I wake up and find out that my world has constricted to the size of a raisin.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Where did the light go, when the sun is right there? Why does the sight of dirty dishes in the sink make my heart flop around in my ribcage like a sack of wet garbage? And there's the guilt, too: the stern questioning of self<i>, </i>the<i> </i>rehashing of time-honored questions like, <i>why-must-we-do-this-again</i> and <i>I-thought-we-were-done-with-this-fuckery</i>?</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
At this point, I think I've finally come to a solution: I put on pants. I leave the house. I go for a walk, or look at plants, or browse the local vintage mall for cool stuff. I let it be okay that I'm not <i>working-working.</i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And inevitably, it's the second that I let myself stop stressing out about the work for two minutes, that the joy of possibility comes back to me. I'll be anxious and stupid and on the verge of having a screaming match with my sofa - but hey, go look at some colorful teakettles and Hawaiian-print shirts and I'm suddenly a-bursting with ideas.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
So this afternoon, instead of hyperventilating on the floor of my studio for an hour, I went over the <a href="http://fremontvintagemall.com/">Fremont Vintage Mall</a> and searched for treasures, with the sole intent of not stressing out about work. I didn't buy anything (although I often do; it's one of my favorite places to find cool housewares) - I just wandered around and took pictures of the textures and colors that caught my eye.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And just like that, I feel better.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

PS. Thank you to everyone who has favorited and commented on my recent releases on Ravelry, Instagram, and the blog - it's been really exciting to work with such great companies and publications, and I'm looking forward to doing more of it in the future! <div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Annnd they just keep coming! A few months back, I started chatting with Wendy from <a href="http://blackwolfranch.com/">Black Wolf Ranch</a> about creating an original design using her yarn, with an eye towards featuring several of her beautiful dyed colorways.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This is the resulting shawl: <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/jardiniere">Jardiniere</a>, a four-color shawl inspired by knitted counterpane motifs, knit up in Wendy's beautifully textured alpaca/mohair Spirit for the body, and lusciously soft & glowy Distinctly Alpaca Sport for the color panels and edging. Wendy and I put together two different colorways - one with lots of color, and one neutral with just a little pop of brightness, which you can take a look at below.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This pattern is debuting as a kit at Black Wolf Ranch's booth at <a href="http://www.knittinguniverse.com/midwest2016">Stitches Midwest 2016</a> this weekend, and will be available exclusively from Black Wolf Ranch until July of 2017. </div>

<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I knitted most of the sample on a two-week trip to London and Paris a few months ago. I'll always remember knitting in bed on a rainy afternoon in Paris: the city shrouded in mist and rain streaking across the windows; our rooftop balcony lined with plants, a kinetic green against the gray.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
When it came time to name the shawl, Jardiniere seemed like a perfect fit: it's a word used in both French and English, with multiple meanings - a flower box, a gardener. A word that by its meaning alone is something ordinary, but in its context means something more.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
A painted container full of earth and color, tendrils of green spilling out over its walls. A woman with dirt under her fingernails holding a tomato still warm from the vine, her face half-shaded from the sun. This is what I thought of as I named it.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I hope you love it.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Happy Friday, friends - and happy Stitches!</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I'm super excited to announce the release of the Stranded Magazine: Mild Weather 2016 issue, and my pattern, the <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/gilia">Gilia legwarmers</a>! Knit up in Miss Babs Yowza - Whatta Skein!, they're a fun, cozy way to extend skirts and dresses into the fall, or keep your legs toasty walking down to the diner for pie and damn good coffee. ;)</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Gilia is available as part of the full issue, which you can check out <a href="http://strandedmag.com/issues/mild-weather-2016-issue/">on their website</a> or <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/sources/stranded-magazine-mild-weather-2016">Ravelry</a>.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Now that the official stuff is done, okay, full disclosure: I'm in love with this issue! The bright, retro styling, the Twin-Peaks-y vibe, the designs - <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/salal-2">Salal</a> and <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/tupshin">Tupshin</a> and <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/latourell">Latourell</a>, omg - soo goood. Not to mention the articles, including a feature on my absolute favorite yarnies, Kate & Rachel of <a href="http://spincycleyarns.com/">Spincycle Yarns</a>! Yep... time to go find my wool skirts, put on some winged eyeliner, and start adding new projects to my queue...</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
(And just as a little introduction after the fact, <a href="http://strandedmag.com/">Stranded</a> is a new online publication put together by local designers & yarn folks Andi Satterlund, Erin Birnel, and Monica Kirby - they've been an awesome team to work with, and I'm super stoked to see what they do next. I hope you like the issue as much as I do!)</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i><br /></i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Happy Thursday!</div>

<br />
Aside from a moment in college when I wore slacks and plain t-shirts every day, I've noticed that I choose things based on a deep, irrational pull that I've felt towards them, even - or maybe especially? - if they're the weirdest thing I've ever seen. Glittery trapeze dress? Yes. Pants in a neon tropical fish print? Yesss. This boxy rayon dress with pockets and a checkerboard/rose/watercolor design on it? Yessssss!!!!<br />
<br />
And thinking back on it, I had these kinds of clothes as a kid, too: a turquoise t-shirt with frolicking dolphins on it, a white crocheted dress, a pair of hot pink jelly shoes. I couldn't describe why I loved these things, only that I did.<br />
<br />
More and more, I've grown to trust that intuition - to design based on what I feel pulled towards, like a weirdo plant leaning towards the sun.<br />
<br />
And so, in honor of that: here's <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/pow-2">Pow!</a> It came to me as a feeling: a sense of joy and playfulness, a picture drawn in comic-book dots - and for an extra bit of fun, Sharon from <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/stitchjones">Stitchjones</a> and I chatted and decided to name the colorway Jelly Shoes. :D<br />
<br />
I hope you like it as much as I do!<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
It's available for download for $6.00, or you can check out the details on Ravelry on the <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/pow-2">Pow! pattern page</a>.<br />

<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/12297234@N07/28399097875/in/dateposted/" style="text-align: start;" title="hatamarancover3"><img alt="hatamarancover3" height="426" src="https://c4.staticflickr.com/9/8463/28399097875_c54bf50215_b.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
A few weeks ago, my friend Sara and I were hanging out and talking about our yarn stashes - y'know, as one does - and the topic of a hat challenge came up. I had just finished some work knitting, and she was in between projects, so we decided to come up with some projects and a silly name featuring a boat pun (cause why not), and thus:<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
HATAMARAN 2016 was born!<br />
<br /></div>
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/12297234@N07/27782532313/in/photostream/" title="hatamaran2"><img alt="hatamaran2" height="400" src="https://c2.staticflickr.com/9/8689/27782532313_d367803fc9_b.jpg" width="266" /></a> <a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/12297234@N07/27782527723/in/dateposted/" title="hatamaran4"><img alt="hatamaran4" height="400" src="https://c4.staticflickr.com/8/7700/27782527723_3a6366c57b_b.jpg" width="266" /></a><a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/12297234@N07/28293891002/in/photostream/" title="hatamaran6"><img alt="hatamaran6" height="400" src="https://c3.staticflickr.com/8/7549/28293891002_b40613d99b_b.jpg" width="266" /></a> <a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/12297234@N07/28293886812/in/photostream/" title="hatamaran3"><img alt="hatamaran3" height="400" src="https://c5.staticflickr.com/9/8578/28293886812_5ca062142d_b.jpg" width="266" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Our challenge, if we chose to accept it:<br />
<br />
5 hat patterns of our choice.<br />
5 skeins of yarn each.<br />
7 days.<br />
<br />
Did we do it? HECK YEAH WE DID.<br />
<br />
(I may or may not have gotten too big for my britches and cast on for an extra Hatamaran project, and theeeennnnn I might have been up until 2 am the night we finished because of my stunning brilliance and foresight... but we're not going to talk about that.)<br />
<br />
And so, without further ado, here are the HATAMARANS: conveniently organized from least to most silly!<br />
<br /></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Way back when I was still in design school, I sketched a cute little hat with a coffee bean pattern on it, and was positively smitten with the idea of it.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Fast forward a couple of years, and that same motif kept on coming up in my sketchbook, again and again. So when I volunteered to work up a design for <a href="http://www.fibergallery.com/">the Fiber Gallery</a> at <a href="http://madronafiberarts.com/">Madrona</a> this last year, I was super delighted to find the right balance of yarn and design to finally make the idea come to life, in the form of the <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/lelia-mitts">Lelia Mitts</a>.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
But in my head, Lelia was always meant to be a hat, too. So I put that idea in the back of my noggin for a second while I finished up some other projects, thinking that I'd get back to it as soon as they were finished.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And thennnnnn we got a puppy. (Good-bye, free time! Hello, adorable poop-troll!)</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
But once the Corgmonster had finally settled in a bit more, and learned important commands like "sit," stay," and "holy crackers, dog, don't put that in your mouth" - a constant work in progress, let's be real - the Lelia Hat seemed like a great way to get back to it.<br />
<br />
Knit up in the same yarns and colorways as the Lelia Mitts, with the same gorgeous color changes of <a href="http://spincycleyarns.com/collections/dyed-in-the-wool-sport-weight">Dyed in the Wool</a>, this hat was like a little potato chip of happiness coming off my needles.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And today, the Lelia Hat pattern is finally ready for its debut! Hooray!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
It's available for download for $5.00, or you can check out the details on Ravelry on the <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/lelia-hat">Lelia Hat pattern page</a>.

<div style="text-align: center;">
