Sunshine

Untitled    Untitled

It was a stunning day yesterday in Seattle: as Sparklepants and I drove over the hill towards home after breakfast with friends, we could see all the way across the water to the mountains, bright and sharp like they were etched in light.

The house next door is stripped down past the foundation, and they're running some sort of hydraulic dirt tamper that sounds like a friendly helicopter is landing next door, so working at home has been a bit of a chore. Yesterday, instead of turning up the music and suffering through it, Sparklepants and I decided to take advantage of the amazing weather by taking our notebooks and pastries to the Ballard Locks for a little work picnic.

It's like the city was finally taking off its winter coats: the water, blue-black and sparkling; flowering apple trees lining the water; a raft of ducks silently charging towards the locks' mossy walls. The ground was still damp and covered in Canada goose shit, but the sun was shining and warm and everything was in bloom.

I ate a pastry and did some copy-editing and worked on a sample, and in the late afternoon I walked home without my coat. It was pretty glorious.

Happy Friday, and happy spring!

Light & Dark

In Darkness

We've had a weird week here in Seattle so far. Yesterday morning, I was drinking my coffee when I heard the news that there was a helicopter crash near the Space Needle. Sometimes I forget how small Seattle feels as a place and a community, but yesterday it really hit home. The pilot and photographer who died in the crash were both from our local news channel, so the newscasters reporting on the story were visibly shaken. I can only imagine how that must feel, to lose two colleagues in a split-second tragedy and then to have to walk in front of a camera and talk about it. How heartbreaking.

The thing is: yesterday was beautiful. Sometime in the night, thousands of tiny green shoots emerged from dormancy, and as I walked out of work, the street in the afternoon sun held a strange, blue-green glow of spring. When I got home, the trellis in our neighbor's front yard was covered in new blossoms, and I was able to snap some photos as the light faded.

And it was strange for it to be so beautiful, because all day, I was distracted by darkness. The color of the street that my housemate crosses to work every day, covered in foam and ash and kerosene. The black slant of shadow as the metal belly and blade of the helicopter fell through the sun to the ground. The faces of the photographer and the pilot in the cockpit, the soft morning shadows sketching across their faces, not realizing that these were their last moments. That crushing dark, in the middle of the bright morning.

So it seemed bittersweet that the day should be so lovely, as the whole city shuddered with loss.

In Light

I love the work I've been doing lately. I'm working on my tailored jacket; knitting samples and sketching new things; measuring and calculating and organizing my thoughts. I worked at Vogue Knitting Live last weekend, then I helped reorganize the shop yesterday, and at the end of the day, it was immensely satisfying to see the result of all our hard work - the bright stacks of older yarn shuffled and neatened, the samples shaken out and re-hung, the new yarns all tucked away.

And I've been taking joy in objects: a leather notebook with removable inserts; a new issue of Interweave Crochet with romantic garments and beautiful shapes; laser-cut wood coasters with cherry blossoms and fir cones on them. The days are starting earlier and ending later, and along with the light, the spring is bringing newness and possibility.

I can't wait to see what happens next.

The Mack is Back

Mr. Boo had a health scare late last week, but he's now on tasty grape antibiotics and hopefully on the mend!

And in other news, we're moving... again!  It seems like yesterday that we were moving from our apartment in the suburbs and hoping that it was the right decision.  It absolutely was, but now it's time to move on to bigger and better things.  We're moving to a townhouse about a mile away - still plenty close to the school, but with more space, and more importantly, with a room big enough for a proper workspace!  We're moving in with one of my friends from the show, who for the purposes of the blog shall be named Pants.  She likes Mackie - so much that she once made him a rocket ship out of a cardboard box with functional seats and wings! - so we'll all get along just fine.

I'm hoping to start posting again regularly soon, probably once the move has happened and life starts getting back to some semblance of normal.  Hope everyone is well!

Final Stitches

IMGP8673 IMGP8670IMGP8675 IMGP8678

Just a few minutes ago, I finished serging and topstitching the straps of my camisoles down - the final stitches in what has been a monumental, overwhelming amount of work.  In the end, the skills I've learned, the friends I've made, and the beautiful clothes I've created have all been more than worth it, and I'm so excited to see it all come together.

Now, all that remains to do before Saturday is errands, pressing, breathing and sleeping.  And maybe I could fit some knitting in there too!

The show is this Saturday, April 13th, with showings at 7 and 9 pm.  Tickets are $25 in advance or $30 at the door, available on Brown Paper Tickets, or in person at the school:

New York Fashion Academy
5201 Ballard Avenue NW
Seattle, WA 98107

It's going to be an amazing show, and I hope to see you there!

FO: Krista Dress

IMGP8633 IMGP8634IMGP8635 IMGP8632

Whew!  Today, I'm over at my friend's house finishing the last bit of hand-sewing for the show.  The last two months have been really intense, so it's really great to be almost done!  I sewed the hem on this dress last night and tacked the lining to the zipper this morning.

This is one of my favorite dresses from my collection.  It's called the Krista Dress, named after one of my dear knitting friends.  It's made of wool crepe, so it's a lovely medium weight - perfect for spring when paired with a little cardigan, or on its own in our cool Seattle summers.

Happy spring!

Barn Sale

IMGP3593

Last Saturday, Lumberjack, his family and I went out to his grandparents' house in rural Washington.  His grandfather passed away a few years ago, and this last weekend the family got together to have a barn sale of his old tools.  It was a pretty emotional day, but I felt really lucky to be included.  I never met his grandfather, but seeing so many things that he made or used - carpentry tools, fishing licenses, tractor, boat, tackle boxes - made me feel like I got a little glimpse of who he was.

I brought my camera with, and took a whole mess of pictures, of pretty much anything that I thought was beautiful, meaningful, or interesting.  I could say so much more, but I think for now I'll let the pictures speak for themselves.

Lumberjack, his mom, and I also went to a nearby yarn store, and I found some beautiful handspun, but that's a story for another day.  I'm really happy with a lot of these photos, and I hope that his family likes them too.
